Pebofatso Mokoena

b. Johannesburg, 1993

In 2014 Pebofatso Mokoena completed his National Diploma in Visual Art from University of Johannesburg, specialising in drawing and printmaking. Mokoena lives and works in Johannesburg. He is currently a collaborative printer at David Krut Workshop.

 

His daily commute to work, which covers 50 kilometers there and back, is a major point of reference in his work in his life and recent practice. He also examines the role of long commutes in relation to South Africa’s long history of migrant labour.

 

His early drawings and prints dealt with the psychological impact of loss. Mokoena’s work lies in the Springs Art Library Collection and the South African Embassy Art Collection in Washington, D.C. among others.

He has exhibited at Turbine Art Fair, FNB Joburg Art Fair, group show titled "South African Voices, A New Generation of Printmakers" in Washington D.C and Beasts of No Nation at Hazard Gallery. In 2017 he completed a residency at the Nirox Foundation.
