Established in May 2015 by Jonathan Freemantle and Daniel Liebmann, the gallery expanded in 2016 to encompass a new building, The Cosmopolitan in July 2016. The Cosmopolitan is a heritage building, formerly a hotel, built in 1899 and situated directly opposite The Museum of African Design (MOAD) on Albrecht St.

A lifestyle destination in one of Johannesburg’s most elegant buildings, dating to 1899, The Cosmopolitan brings together fashion, cuisine, art and design in a unique, interactive and cutting-edge way, inspired by international retail pioneers such as the 10 Corso Como in Milan and Dover Street Market in London.

An array of culinary experiences - from Dario d’Angeli’sCube Tasting Kitchen, and the luxury Yswara tea salon, to Firebird Coffee roastery – all interact with a landscaped sculpture garden planted with old-fashioned flowers designed by Patrick Watson. Upstairs is DEPARTMENT Store, stocking local and international design including Crystal Birch’s Hat Church, SUPER Sunglasses Milan and a wide selection of other design brands.
